Answer the following questions in no less than 300 words but no greater than 1000 words put together...

Character's background (their past and present):

He's only five years old man...

Gohan was born to Son Goku and Chichi, a pair of semi-retired martial artists living in isolation in The Middle of Nowhere, Dragon World -- also known as Mt. Paozu. Precocious as he naturally is, his mother decided to ensure his future success as a scholar and drowned him in textbooks. This was a hard blow to Gohan's dad, because it came alongside a total ban from all fighting ever, and a good fight is Goku's singular favorite thing in all the world. Still, Goku put up with it despite his disappointment, and when Gohan was four, decided to bring him to visit his old friends and fellow martial artists at Kame House.

For the most part, Gohan was polite but shy, and opted for playing with the sea turtle while the grown-ups delivered exposition. It was an idyllic outing uuuup until his evil alien uncle arrived, revealed the alien backstory, and kidnapped Gohan, insisting Goku had to prove his goodwill by killing humans or else.

Goku chose instead to fight back, alongside his then-archnemesis and supposed demon Piccolo. The rivals were down but not out when a sobbing and enraged Gohan suddenly burst out of a shattered space pod and head butted Raditz hard enough to stun. For that moment of intense emotion and horror at his dad's pain, the toddler was stronger than all 3 trained adults.

Fast forward to the end of the battle and Raditz's comrades threatening to show up and raze the planet. An intrigued Piccolo kidnaps Gohan with the intent of training him to beat the Saiyans and maybe to turn against Goku and ruin his life. Maybe.

To toughen him up, Piccolo abandoned him for 6 months, until the poor kid developed enough self-sufficiency to forage and fight off the wild dinosaurs alone. Gohan took to actual combat well, but never developed a liking for it. Fighting, for him, is a necessity. Still, he was grateful to Piccolo for teaching him and basically adopted him as a spare dad. Gohan's unconditional love affected Piccolo deeply, and while he was harsh on Gohan during that actual battle, for not always rising to the stakes, Piccolo still sacrificed his life to protect him.

Gohan's guilt for failing made him determined to set things right and he insisted on going to planet Namek. Unable to watch people suffering, he snapped and rescued Dende, one of the last survivors of the massacre by the others trying to get the wish-granting dragon balls. After bluffing Vegeta out of his dragon ball, helping defeat his father's possessed body, and allying with Vegeta, Gohan & friends decided to double cross him and try to wish their friends back to life.

Character's personality:

In a word, sheltered. In another, dutiful.

Despite his dislike of violence, Gohan can't pass up anyone in need. Self preservation really isn't on his radar. He's seen that preserving himself just hurts more people. Not the healthiest perspective, but it's what stuck.

Gohan is dutiful, but not a pushover. He chooses his battles, yes, but once chosen, he usually keeps on truckin'. If his mom says read ten books, he'll do it, but when she said "you can't go into space on a wild goose chase," he shouted her down.

Shouting down his mom like that is normally unlike him, though. He's a pacifist and a butterfly-chaser. Even the shouting to mom was brief, but it demonstrated a kind of willpower that Gohan rarely has the opportunity to follow through on.

And the key factor in how Gohan determines which battles he'll fight is often "Who will be hurt if I don't?" Gohan hates to see an underdog kicked and nothing will make him lose his temper faster. It's a genuine struggle for him not to act on his altruism, and going well beyond the canon point I've chosen, it's really a big factor in how his life proceeds. He has a bad case of Good Samaritan Syndrome.

He's also pretty quick on the uptake. Chalk it up to all that studying, but his ability to retain knowledge and come to conclusions is sometimes better than the adults he's surrounded by. When Vegeta starts yammering about the dragon balls, Gohan manages to figure out that the one he's got was actually hidden by Vegeta. Less smoothly, he manages to nervously bluff Vegeta into leaving him alone and not finding it. He's helped along immensely by Vegeta's ego here, yes, but he's still able to keep his reaction to a controlled "oh no this is bad" instead of a full-blown panic or surrender.

He's hard on himself, too. Probably because his parents and mentor are hard on him in different ways, but also going back to how self preservation won't preserve anyone else-- he's pretty ashamed of himself for panicking during the fight with the Saiyans. Nevermind that, at five years old, the fact that he was there at all was pretty brave. All Gohan really remembers is that he choked at a critical moment and didn't do his part to defeat the bad guy.

He does have a temper, though. Again, it's really only invoked by hurting or threatening people, but it comes with a skyrocketing power level and, before Piccolo started training him to harness it, Gohan had no memory of these temper flares. Even now, he can't really control them-- they just sort of happen, but they prove that Gohan is capable of being the strongest in the universe.

Too bad he'd rather just read his books.

Character's skills/abilities/powers:

He's smart as a whip and crammed full of scientific and mathematical knowledge. He does algebra for fun when he's bored.

Gohan can control his personal energy (ki) as well. This gives him the ability to project energy blasts outward as attacks. By surrounding himself with his energy and pushing himself upward, he can fly. A particular skill of Earthlings and Namekians is also to sense others' energy, and to suppress or elevate ones own energy to hide or intimidate as necessary.

His skill with ki isn't too varied. He has a lot to draw from, yes, but while ki has specialized applications like blinding people, Gohan mostly sticks to using his signature Masenko blast.

He also has extensive experience in foraging, hunting, fishing and cooking over an open fire, although not with any flare. It's a survival skill.

Finally, he's quite skilled in martial arts, thanks to Piccolo and Krillin and all the aliens trying to kill him.

Any special equipment your character is bringing along? This includes weaponry, magic items, etc.: Just his Saiyan armor.

Are you bringing your character to [community profile] ten_fwd from another game? If you are, which game?: no

If you answered yes above, briefly summarize how they were changed by and what challenges they faced in the climate of their previous game(s):

Why do you want to play this character in Ten Forward, and what do you plan to do with them?

Gohan's kind of a weird kid. Even if you ignore the part where he's half-alien, he's lived the majority of his five years in almost total isolation. Throwing him into an unfamiliar place where he has to look after himself is not new territory for him, but surrounding him with people, when he can't just walk out into nature and slice a dinosaur's tail off for breakfast, that is new! Self-reliance is good, but not really possible in space.
